CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Andrea Ford’s Estate, Beverly Hills,

California, United States

Clara gritted her teeth and took the stairs two at a time, clearing them quickly and following the directions from the magitech device—pointing her toward the highest level of security the mansion had to offer. She slipped into a large bedroom just as the front door opened and slammed at once.

It was an understatement to say that the elegantly decorated bedroom was oversized. It was the size the entire one-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles that Clara had abandoned since joining Delta Underground Operatives.

A large canopy bed drenched in a fluffy silk comforter and loaded with pillows sat against the nearest wall. There was a huge armoire, a low dresser and a chaise lounge. One door led to a master bathroom suite. Another door must have led to the balcony overlooking the backyard and pool area.

There was a third door and Clara guessed it led to a closet. That was also where the magitech was pointing to—a high-security frequency was emanating from behind that door. On the wall was a keypad, and if she wasn’t convinced that’s where the vault was before, she certainly was now.

Clara only partially closed the door to the bedroom, wanting to be able to hear what was going on below on the first floor. Loud feet, hinting that Lisa Ford was wearing high heels, thundered across the floor below.

“Sonja!” Lisa yelled, so clear and loud that Clara easily heard her, even without Damien’s enhanced hearing. “Where are you? Is the food ready? The guests will be here soon.”

Clara glanced at an elegant grandfather clock next to the chaise lounge. It was a quarter until the hour. That must be when the party started.

“Yes, Miss Ford,” Sonja said, her voice sounding scared and not at all like the one that Clara had heard in her head. “I’ve got everything ready.”

“You better have!” Lisa scolded, her high heels echoing each other as she marched around the dining area. “What is this? You call this a centerpiece?”

“I thought it looked good, Miss Ford,” Sonja said meekly. Clara could feel the woman’s hurt and shame from all the way up on the second floor. “I’m sorry. I’ll fix it.”

“No! You’ll just screw it up again,” Lisa admonished. “I’ll do it myself, but I’m supposed to be getting ready and here I am fixing your work. Just goes to show how useless you are.”

Clara shook her head, wishing it could have been Lisa Ford who was put in a coma and not her sister. However, Andrea Ford must have superior intellect and powers if Taz Kiera had chosen her for his “family.” Clara guessed those talents had skipped Lisa Ford as they tended to do in a family of siblings. One got the brains and the other all the attitude. That was Clara’s experience, anyway.

Pacing over to the closet, Clara held her breath, putting her fingers on the handle. She didn’t know if an alarm would sound when she opened the door, but she seriously hoped not.
